Over the past week, Professor Campbell Booth participated in the IET DPSP Conference at Hong Kong Polytechnic University. This conference, one of the few dedicated exclusively to power system protection, brought together experts from across the industry. It offered a platform for specialists, academics, and business leaders from over 30 countries across the Asia-Pacific region to discuss emerging challenges and innovations in power system protection.

The 18th edition of the conference focused on providing solutions and strategies to address the evolving challenges in the power sector, shaped by new technological advancements and uncertainties.

On the opening day, Professor Booth delivered a presentation titled “Academia’s Challenges and Solutions for Providing Future Workforce,” and chaired several panel discussions and breakout sessions on critical topics including:

• Protection Challenges of High IBR Presence
• Transformer and Generator Protection
• Line Protection

Additionally, the conference included a technical visit to I.PARK1, Hong Kong’s first waste-to-energy (WtE) facility, located on an artificial island near Shek Kwu Chau. The facility treats municipal solid waste and serves as a model for sustainable energy solutions. More details about I.PARK1 can be found on the Environmental Protection Department’s website.
