Ensign’s Graeme Hawker (University of Strathclyde) and Gavin Irvine (University of St Andrews) travelled to the Port of Leith an event hosted by Forth Ports Limited to see the world’s first Green Hydrogen Shore Power Demonstrator that uses clean, green hydrogen energy to reduce carbon emissions from vessels when berthed in port. The project is part of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition Round 4 (CMDC4), funded by the UK Department for Transport (DfT) and delivered by Innovate UK.

Also being showcased were two hydrogen powered boats from Heriot-Watt University and University of Glasgow that will race in this summer’s energy boat challenge in Monaco. The Vital Spark Hydrogen Hydrofoil project is an innovative Scottish collaboration led by PlusZero and Forth Ports, with support from Hydrogen Scotland while “The Experiment of Leith H2” is a cutting-edge trimaran designed by Paul Sparrow, dubbed the “Caterham of the Sea” for its robust construction, sharp handling and high stability.

Gavin Irvine travelled across from St Andrews in the Hyundai Nexo Hydrogen Fuel Cell car that has been procured by the University of St Andrews and will play a big part in the ENSIGN – IES-DT WP4: Hydrogen Sub Digital Twin project.
