Electrical Network sub Digital Twin

The purpose of WP2 is to develop and validate electrical network models that accurately reflect the operation of the low-voltage distribution system in SPEN and its partners’ areas. This effort will be guided by the architecture established in WP1 and will integrate power flows from other energy vectors in WPs 3-5, focusing on future scenarios involving low carbon technology (LCT) penetration.

Building on previous research and development in network Digital Twins (DTs), the project will characterize electrical networks through simulations and information models. It will create data protocols and methods for automated DT creation for specific geographic areas within the SPEN distribution network.

Work Package

Aim

Physics-based and informed machine learning models will be developed to represent various distribution asset types, ensuring realistic modelling of material constraints and reliability across legacy and modern infrastructure. To capture residential and light commercial load characteristics, a load group behaviour synthesis DT will be created, generating diverse load profiles based on seasonal and environmental factors, informed by historical metering data.

The electrical network DT will be calibrated using SPEN’s operational data to ensure accuracy in model outputs. The final task will produce and validate the first-generation electrical network DT, integrating it with WP1.
